Charlie Is Not Feeling Well...

This is the face of an unhappy kitty. This is the second time in his life that Charlie has been sick. Strangely, it seems that even Daisy knows that something isn't right. For the time being, Daisy has decided not to pick on Charlie. I guess that since her previous owner got sick and died, Daisy, is probably remembering that when people get sick -- even furry people -- it's not a good thing.

After a trip to the vet, Charlie has new reasons to be unhappy. The vet's considered opinion is that Charlie has bronchitis. Charlie was uncharacteristically quiet on the way to the vet. When we arrived, Charlie had two measures of blood drawn (one from each of his front paws) so that the vet could run some tests. Charlie spent the next few minutes being abused and complained bitterly. Eventually, the exam was over and Charlie very happily ran back into his carrier for the trip home. Charlie will need to get antibiotics twice a day and a dose of vitamins once a day for the next few days. Fortunately, its all liquid, so, it should be relatively easy to administer. On the bright side, Charlie did manage to lose 2 pounds -- he is now 25 pounds.

Sometime in August, it became clear that Sammy would be coming home. There was a hearing where Sammy, through his attorney, described the events that brought him into this situation. Sammy spoke to the victim's family and apologized. Mom and I were concerned that the victim's family might make trouble, but, I believe that Sammy's heartfelt apology combined with the knowledge that the offender responsible for the victim's unfortunate turn has been loose on the streets of Philadelphia for years while Sammy paid the price, moved the victim's family to tears... Winter 2009...

New Year's Day There were occasional calls from New Year's well-wishers. I didn't hear from Josh during Christmas, but, he did mange to leave a quick message on New Year's day. New Year's day was itself, quite subdued -- as indicated by Charlie. I spent most of the day working though some issues on the various web sites that I manage. The weather wasn't all that good -- windy and cold. The Mummers parade didn't start until around 10:00am and even though it was only supposed to be six hours this year (due to bugdet cutbacks), it still managed to drag on and on and on and on... I'm not really a fan of Mummers, but, I had the parade on for a bit. Charlie spent most of the day napping. I regret to inform you...

I regret to inform you of the passing of my grandfather, Rafael Rodriguez. Rafael Rodriguez was born on December 3, 1924 in Salina, Puerto Rico. He came to the United States in the late ’40s, bringing with him his mother and daughter and the desire to make a better life for himself and his family. Rafael received a calling to serve God and became a minister in the early ’60s. According to senior members of his congregation, Rafael was instrumental in the founding of 25 churches and touched the lives of many in the Hispanic community. After the death of his wife of more than 40 years, five years ago, I invited Rafael to live with me. He's had some health issues over the years and lately his health has been in decline. Although I knew that "someday" Rafael would leave me, his departure on Monday (April 28th) morning still came as a shock. I am thankful for the time that I had with him.
