Toto Continues To Surprise Me...
Earlier today, Mom made rice pudding. As, her mother made it years ago, Mom makes rice pudding using rice and coconuts. Back in the day, actual coconuts would be used for the juice and meat. And, the shells would be boiled in water to color the rice pudding. It would have been a fairly labor-intensive operation. For today's rice pudding, we would be partaking of modern conveniences such as canned coconut, but, Mom insists on using at least one actual coconut in her rice pudding. While I was breaking open the one coconut we would be using for our rice pudding, I noticed that Toto seemed to take an unusual interest in the coconut meat. I gave him just a tiny smidgen of the coconut meat and he gobbled it up. And, soon afterwards, he was standing up on his hind legs with his paws on the kitchen table, looking for more coconut meat.
Although coconut meat is not considered toxic for cats, it is not recommended for cats as the fat in coconut meat can cause other problems for cats. So, while I generally do not begrudge Toto something he really, really wants, in this case, I didn't want to take the chance of causing more harm than good, so, no more coconut meat for Toto. I had no idea that Toto would take an interest in coconuts of all things.
