Welcome To Chris...

Over the weekend, Mom decided to get a new companion kitty. Enter Chris -- a 3 year-old midget of a kitty (Chris is only about half the size of Daisy and Toto) who bears an uncanny resemblance to Charlie. Charlie had a bit more white on his chest and belly. I set up a safe spot for Chris to hangout in the upstairs hallway. Needless to say, Daisy and Toto were not happy with the intruder. Chris is very friendly and outgoing with people, but, with kitties, despite her diminutive size, Chris is no kitty pushover. Daisy and Toto hissed at Chris and she gave the hiss right back to them. Daisy tried to block access to the upstairs, but, Chris just ignored Daisy.

Toto didn't want any part of Chris. He moved to the laundry room and decided to settle into a nest on top of the dryer. I let Toto mope for a little bit, but, after he refused to eat or drink for a while, I lured him out of the laundry room with cat snacks and a nice grooming session. After a couple of days with Chris in the house, Daisy and Toto can now stand to be in the same house with Chris, but, Chris still has to keep her distance. Daisy adapted more easily than Toto because Daisy refused to give up her routine for Chris. Daisy wanted to sit in the front window and bask in the morning sun more than she wanted to be concerned about Chris.

Chris came to us from the local SPCA. She was surrendered by her previous owners when they moved and couldn't take the cat the with them. Chris is very talkative and outgoing. She loves being around people and has bonded very well with Mom. Chris even moved into Mom's recliner and made herself at home. We expect that it will take about a week or two for all of the kitties to get used to each other.

Sometime in August, it became clear that Sammy would be coming home. There was a hearing where Sammy, through his attorney, described the events that brought him into this situation. Sammy spoke to the victim's family and apologized. Mom and I were concerned that the victim's family might make trouble, but, I believe that Sammy's heartfelt apology combined with the knowledge that the offender responsible for the victim's unfortunate turn has been loose on the streets of Philadelphia for years while Sammy paid the price, moved the victim's family to tears... We also learned that Sammy has been involved in a number of community activism initiatives from supporting military veterans, to Sammy's work with LACEO, and a host of other endeavors to support the community. Winter 2009...

New Year's Day There were occasional calls from New Year's well-wishers. I didn't hear from Josh during Christmas, but, he did mange to leave a quick message on New Year's day. New Year's day was itself, quite subdued -- as indicated by Charlie. I spent most of the day working though some issues on the various web sites that I manage. The weather wasn't all that good -- windy and cold. The Mummers parade didn't start until around 10:00am and even though it was only supposed to be six hours this year (due to bugdet cutbacks), it still managed to drag on and on and on and on... I'm not really a fan of Mummers, but, I had the parade on for a bit. Charlie spent most of the day napping. I regret to inform you...

I regret to inform you of the passing of my grandfather, Rafael Rodriguez. Rafael Rodriguez was born on December 3, 1924 in Salina, Puerto Rico. He came to the United States in the late ’40s, bringing with him his mother and daughter and the desire to make a better life for himself and his family. Rafael received a calling to serve God and became a minister in the early ’60s. According to senior members of his congregation, Rafael was instrumental in the founding of 25 churches and touched the lives of many in the Hispanic community. After the death of his wife of more than 40 years, five years ago, I invited Rafael to live with me. He's had some health issues over the years and lately his health has been in decline. Although I knew that "someday" Rafael would leave me, his departure on Monday (April 28th) morning still came as a shock. I am thankful for the time that I had with him.
