LACEO Banquet 2013...

The time has come for the annual LACEO banquet. For those of you who don't know, LACEO is the Latin-American Cultural Exchange Organization. LACEO is a Philadelphia non-profit organization, dedicated to outreach to youth and the local community, located in Graterford Prison, Graterford PA. LACEO usually holds a banquet complete with guest speakers on the day before Mother's Day.This year's LACEO banquet went off without any major controversies. This year, Anthony was supposed to go to the banquet, but, due to a scheduling conflict, Anthony couldn't make the trip, so, after Sam pushed through a last-minute change, I went in Anthony's place.

We arrived at 10:00 am. There was some initial confusion about where we were supposed to wait, but, by 10:30 am the confusion had settled and we started the check-in process. This year, we walked through the middle of the facility. It was a long walk, but, Mom made the trip without incident. We arrived at the banquet area by around 11:00 am.This year's menu included pork chops, chicken wings, rice, an assortment of salads and for dessert, banana cake and eggnog ice cream. This year's event didn't pass entirely without incident. The authorities decreed that the inmates could not take any food to their cells Anything that wasn't eaten would be thrown out. All things considered, it was a good day. We got home around 4:00 pm.

Sometime in August, it became clear that Sammy would be coming home. There was a hearing where Sammy, through his attorney, described the events that brought him into this situation. Sammy spoke to the victim's family and apologized. Mom and I were concerned that the victim's family might make trouble, but, I believe that Sammy's heartfelt apology combined with the knowledge that the offender responsible for the victim's unfortunate turn has been loose on the streets of Philadelphia for years while Sammy paid the price, moved the victim's family to tears... We also learned that Sammy has been involved in a number of community activism initiatives from supporting military veterans, to Sammy's work with LACEO, and a host of other endeavors to support the community. Winter 2009...

New Year's Day There were occasional calls from New Year's well-wishers. I didn't hear from Josh during Christmas, but, he did mange to leave a quick message on New Year's day. New Year's day was itself, quite subdued -- as indicated by Charlie. I spent most of the day working though some issues on the various web sites that I manage. The weather wasn't all that good -- windy and cold. The Mummers parade didn't start until around 10:00am and even though it was only supposed to be six hours this year (due to bugdet cutbacks), it still managed to drag on and on and on and on... I'm not really a fan of Mummers, but, I had the parade on for a bit. Charlie spent most of the day napping. I regret to inform you...

I regret to inform you of the passing of my grandfather, Rafael Rodriguez. Rafael Rodriguez was born on December 3, 1924 in Salina, Puerto Rico. He came to the United States in the late ’40s, bringing with him his mother and daughter and the desire to make a better life for himself and his family. Rafael received a calling to serve God and became a minister in the early ’60s. According to senior members of his congregation, Rafael was instrumental in the founding of 25 churches and touched the lives of many in the Hispanic community. After the death of his wife of more than 40 years, five years ago, I invited Rafael to live with me. He's had some health issues over the years and lately his health has been in decline. Although I knew that "someday" Rafael would leave me, his departure on Monday (April 28th) morning still came as a shock. I am thankful for the time that I had with him.
